Shiing-Shen Chern

28 October 1911 – 3 December 2004

Shiing-Shen Chern was a Chinese-American mathematician regarded as one of the leaders in differential geometry of the 20th century. He is known for the Chern classes and the Chern–Gauss–Bonnet theorem, and he trained generations of geometers while building major mathematical institutions in both the United States and China.
