François Mitterrand
26 October 1916 – 8 January 1996
François Mitterrand was a French politician who served as President of France from 1981 to 1995, the longest presidential tenure in the country's history. He held ministerial office under the Fourth Republic, rebuilt the Socialist Party as its First Secretary from 1971, and won the presidency at his third attempt. His two terms included nationalisations, the abolition of the death penalty and two periods of cohabitation with right-wing governments.
