Cahit Arf
11 October 1910 – 26 December 1997
Cahit Arf was a Turkish mathematician known for the Arf invariant of a quadratic form in characteristic two, the Hasse–Arf theorem in ramification theory, and Arf rings and Arf closures in the study of singularities. Educated in France and at Göttingen, he taught for decades at Istanbul University and the Middle East Technical University in Ankara. His portrait later appeared on the Turkish ten-lira banknote.
